The different voltages that flow through your body when ungrounded

November 11th 2013

This video gives an excellent demonstration of the differing voltages that flow through your body depending on how close you are to electrical interference. It also shows how you can earth yourself and send all these excess voltages out of your body and to ground, simply by taking your shoes off. Interestingly, you will also see how asphalt road surfaces are not a grounding environment because they act as an insulator, whereas concrete is a good earthing substrate.

All about earthing

November 3rd 2013

Earthing is a fast-growing movement based upon the major discovery that connecting to the Earth’s natural energy is foundational for vibrant health. Here’s a short and sweet animation that explains the basics of earthing (or grounding), and what it is and does for you.

Proof that grounding can reduce your blood pressure

November 2nd 2013

Feet on grassAs a consequence of the low carbohydrate / high fat diet I have been eating since July this year my blood pressure has been slowly declining, and I have been monitoring it closely so that I can get my doctor to adjust my hypertension medications as necessary. As you can see from the chart on the left for October, slow but sure progress is being made.

More interestingly, though, have a look at the dotted vertical line two thirds along. This represents the day I first started grounding myself using an earthing pad under my office keyboard and mouse. After a few days an earthing sheet I ordered arrived, and you can see even an further reduction in blood pressure once I fitted it to the bed.

If you are skeptical about the concept of grounding this should make you at least think again. Yes, it may sound like nonsense, especially if you are scientifically trained. But it shouldn’t because grounding is a well-understood phenomenon, used the world over to shield electronics from unwanted interference. So why can’t grounding also help to shield people too?

The theory behind this type of improvement in blood pressure comes from observations that comparisons of blood from ungrounded and grounded people are quite different. Ungrounded blood is often clumped and coagulated together, and the blood cells are slow moving. Whereas in grounded blood the cells are separated from each other and faster moving, as shown in the following image:

Left: Ungrounded blood; Right: Blood after grounding for an hour.

Therefore, it is believed, that this more disperse and faster blood requires less pressure to move it around the circulatory system, and so blood pressure drops.

Lowered blood pressure is just one of the many benefits that grounding can provide. For example, my wife had been waking up with a headache for many months, but just two days after fitting the earthing sheet she woke up without one. What’s more she has had an annoying cough every morning for years, but (so far) not any more since sleeping grounded.

Grounded: The Movie

November 1st 2013

This feature length documentary, by Steve Kroschel, tells the true tale of an Alaskan wildlife filmmaker’s persistent curiosity and quest to test the claims of what appears to be an outrageously simple and “too good to be true” healing concept – physical, bare skin contact with the Earth – which may have been known by civilizations throughout history.

He introduces this concept to his fellow townsmen in Haines, Alaska (population 1,700), many of whom suffer from major pain or disabling conditions. Starting with his own pain relief, he witnesses and films a surprising and miraculous healing in the town generated by simply grounding people to the Earth, that is, reconnecting them to the Earth’s healing energy.

The news of the town’s response pretty soon draws the attention of Apollo astronauts who walked on the moon, as well as doctors and scientists. This is a must-see movie.

The film is an independant production that cost a great deal of money to make and which (to help recover the costs) can be viewed for a minimal rental fee at Steve’s website. Here’s a trailer for the movie:

What the professionals say about grounding: Dr Joseph Mercola

November 1st 2013

Dr Joseph Mercola is an alternative medicine proponent, osteopathic physician, and web entrepreneur who also operates the Dr. Mercola Natural Health Center in Schaumburg, Illinois. He wrote the best-selling books The No-Grain Diet (with Alison Rose Levy) and The Great Bird Flu Hoax.

Dr Mercola argues against over-consumption of sugar, especially high-fructose corn syrup, which is the predominant sweetener of many commercial sodas and soft drinks, and processed flour and grains, which the body rapidly converts into sugar, leading to weight gain and other conditions.

He is also a strong proponent of grounding and has conducted many interviews with researchers in the field (available on YouTube). Here’s a clip from his website:

“Do you notice you feel better when you walk barefoot on the Earth? Recent research has explained why this happens. Your immune system functions optimally when your body has an adequate supply of electrons, which are easily and naturally obtained by barefoot contact with the Earth.

Research indicates that electrons from the Earth have antioxidant effects that can protect your body from inflammation and its many well-documented health consequences. For most of our evolutionary history, humans have had continuous contact with the Earth. It is only recently that substances such as asphalt, wood, rugs, and plastics have separated us from this contact.

It is known that the Earth maintains a negative electrical potential on its surface. When you are in direct contact with the ground (walking, sitting, or laying down on the earth’s surface) the earth’s electrons are conducted to your body, bringing it to the same electrical potential as the earth. Living in direct contact with the earth grounds your body, inducing favorable physiological and electrophysiological changes that promote optimum health.

There is an emerging science documenting how conductive contact with the Earth, which has is also known as Earthing or grounding, is highly beneficial to your health and completely safe. Earthing appears to minimize the consequences of exposure to potentially disruptive fields like “electromagnetic pollution” or “dirty electricity.”

Some of the recent evidence supporting this approach involves multiple studies documenting Earthing’s improvement in blood viscosity, heart rate variability, inflammation, cortisol dynamics, sleep, autonomic nervous system (ANS) balance, and reduced effects of stress.”

What the professionals say about grounding: Dr John Briffa

October 31st 2013

Dr John Briffa is a practising doctor, author and international speaker. He is prize-winning graduate of University College London School of Medicine, where he also gained a BSc degree in Biomedical Sciences.

Dr Briffa is a leading authority on the impact of nutrition and other lifestyle factors on health and illness. He is dedicated to providing individuals with information and advice they can use to take control of their health.

I was curious to know what some well-known medical professionals think about grounding and was pleased to see that Dr Briffa has successfully tried it for himself. As he reports on his website:

“On 3rd January this year I vaulted over a high gate and landed on some steps the other side, twisting my right ankle as I did this. I’ve had pain in this ankle ever since. Not enough to stop me walking, but running has been out of the question. Rushing down the stairs (as I like to do) has also been quite uncomfortable. I’ve also had a pain in the top of my left foot. Not sure when this started, but I first noticed it at least several weeks ago.

My earthing experiment started with me sitting with my bare feet on damp grass on 14th April. I lasted 20 minutes. Later in the day I noticed that the pain in my left foot and ankle had disappeared completely (and they have not returned since).

Another odd thing is that for the preceding few days I had been brewing an ingrowing toenail on my right big toe. I used to get these a lot when I younger, but they’ve been rarer since I’ve gotten older. The normal course for these is to get steadily worse over several days and then I’d perform a bit of DIY surgery (don’t ask) to relieve the issue. The morning after my first earthing escapade, I noticed that my ingrowing toenail had utterly resolved on its own.

That day I put my bare feet on the grass again, this time for 30 minutes. And then some earthing kit that I’d ordered arrived in the post and I’ve been using ever since (primarily an earthing mat which I put my feet on when I work).”

Why I created this website

October 30th 2013

Feet on grassI’ve been looking into a strange phenomenon recently that promises to become a health revolution. Actually, it’s not so much of a cure, as a correction for a problem caused by modern living, in that over the last hundred or so years we have insulated ourselves from the planet we live on with tarmac roads, rubber-soled shoes, carpeted houses and so on.

But is that a problem? Well, the answer is that it seems to be, because there is very strong evidence that biological beings benefit from being grounded to the planet, and suffer when disconnected. I have performed experiments myself to test this, as witnessed in the photograph below, which was taken seven days after planting two identical pansies, giving each 60ml of water each day. The only difference was that using a copper wire I connected the soil in the flowerpot on the left to the earth pin on a mains plug (via a 1 mega-ohm resistor for additional safety BTW).

Note: In the UK the electricity companies provide a good earth to every house, so this is a safe and reliable thing to do. However, this is not the case in all countries, so the best alternative when unsure is to simply run a wire out of the window, attach it to an iron, steel or copper rod and bury it in the earth. The end result is the same.

Left: A grounded plant; Right: This plant is ungrounded

In modern life there are all sorts of electromagnetic radiation vibrating through our bodies, from mains hum, to computer chip interference, light bulbs, television, to cordless and mobile phones. And it seems that these can interfere with biological life just enough to slow it down.

Serious athletes are getting grounded

In people, this can result in mysterious aches and pains, slow healing of wounds, difficulty sleeping and more. Don’t believe me? Even Tour de France cycling teams earth themselves to gain extra energy and heal their muscles (and minor injuries) over night. If international athletes take grounding seriously, maybe we all should.

Anyway, I have discovered that the health benefits are so far-reaching that I want to do my part in spreading the message. For example, long-time readers of my blog will know that I have had weight-issues for some years, which I am finally overcoming. As part of this I have also had hypertension. Fortunately my low carb diet has brought this down, but not enough for my liking. So imagine my amazement when I started to ground myself using an electronic technician’s grounding mat under my keyboard and mouse at work, and found that my daily blood pressure readings had dropped from an average 135/85 down to 115/75. That’s a huge drop for both systolic and diastolic pressures.

Why does this happen? Well, nobody is sure yet, because not much research has been made. However, when the blood of someone who has been ungrounded for a while is taken, and then compared under a microscope with another sample from after about an hour of being grounded, you can see a serious difference. The grounded blood cells are unclumped and disperse, making them freer flowing. Speculation is that the negatively charged earth supplies free electrons to our bodies which we can then make use of.

Left: Blood from ungrounded volunteers; Right: After grounding for an hour.

Reconnecting with the planet

But there may be more to it than that, because the earth has a magnetic field that changes minute to minute, hour to hour, season to season, year to year, and even over the time-span of centuries and more. When things are grounded to the planet they become in sync (or perhaps in tune) with it, which may lead to a greater harmony with all other living things. Yes, it sounds a bit ‘hippy’ but the concept of grounding is so new a lot is still speculation right now. The scientific studies are beginning to get underway, and more theories will emerge as we grow our understanding.

I am so intrigued by this phenomena, that I have also invested in a cotton sheet embedded with fine silver strands so that I can stay grounded overnight. Guess what, by the way? Instead of waking up at around 7am, I’m now finding myself fully awake and refreshed anytime after 4am. I can’t even make myself go back to sleep as I’m not tired anymore, so I get up and have a few extra productive hours in my day. What’s more I’m no-longer confused and grumpy until I’ve had my first coffee ; )

If you find this concept intriguing I hope you’ll join me, and even try some experiments for yourself, which I’d love to hear about, or maybe you can even guest blog with me. You can contact me using the panel over on the right-hand side.

Stumblers: If you like this article please give it a thumbs up – thanks!

Book review: The Body Electric

October 29th 2013

The Body Electric tells the fascinating story of our bioelectric selves. Robert O. Becker, a pioneer in the filed of regeneration and its relationship to electrical currents in living things, challenges the established mechanistic understanding of the body.

He found clues to the healing process in the long-discarded theory that electricity is vital to life. But as exciting as Becker’s discoveries are, pointing to the day when human limbs, spinal cords, and organs may be regenerated after they have been damaged, equally fascinating is the story of Becker’s struggle to do such original work.

The Body Electric explores new pathways in our understanding of evolution, acupuncture, psychic phenomena, and healing.

Book review: Earthing

October 29th 2013

Earthing, the most eye-opening book to appear in decades, introduces the planet’s powerful, amazing and overlooked natural healing energy and how people anywhere can readily connect to it. The never-before-told story filled with fascinating research and real-life testimonials chronicles a discovery of the first magnitude with potential to create a global health revolution.

Throughout most of evolution humans walked barefoot and slept on the ground, largely oblivious to the fact that the surface of the Earth contains limitless healing energy. Science has discovered this energy as free-flowing electrons constantly replenished by solar radiation and lightning strikes. Few people know it, but the ground provides a subtle electric signal that maintains health and governs the intricate mechanisms that make our bodies work just like plugging a lamp into a power socket makes it light up.

Modern lifestyles, including the widespread use of insulative rubber or plastic soled shoes, has disconnected us from this energy and, of course, we no longer sleep on the ground as we did in times past. EARTHING describes how this physical disconnection from the Earth creates abnormal physiology and contributes to inflammation, pain, fatigue, stress and poor sleep, and how by reconnecting to the Earth symptoms are rapidly relieved and even eliminated.

Demonstrating grounding with test equipment

October 29th 2013

Clint Ober (writer of the book Earthing) demonstrates to Dr Mercola how earthing/grounding works using a simple electricity meter and an earthing mat similar to those used by electronics engineers who don’t want the electricity in their bodies to fry the circuits they work on.
